On March 3 2022 my 61 year old sister was taken to BGH in Brockville, On. She was feeling unwell and had been for a few days. She was picked up at her residence by ambulance and taken to the hospital. I spoke to her on the 5th . She said she was breathing a little better but they wanted it better (hospital staff). Later that day a Dr. From the ICU called and told me that they were going to have to put my sister on a ventilator to help her breath easier, and that Janice had made me her medical voice and that she wanted all measures taken to keep her alive. After this is when our families nightmare starts. Covid Restrictions kept us away from her. The information was very scarce and only pertained to her oxygen levels, and that she was sedated as well as on a paralytic drug to keep her calm. We called everyday, then we were told that they were to busy to talk to all of us throughout the day and it would be more productive if one person called daily and relayed the info (which was nothing). On March 11 I made my daily call and they were busy but promised to call me back. This was at 3:20pm. The on call Dr called me at 7:50 that night and said that they had to put a chest tube in my sister. To say the least I was shocked I asked when did they do this and he said that it was earlier in the day. I asked why I wasn’t informed he said nothing. The next morning the 12th the same Dr called my cell phone at 5:30am to tell me she had a restful night. This was the only time they called. That day I was allowed in to see her for a family meeting, The Dr on duty that day was the same one that called me that morning. He asked about Janice what her life was like what her interest were and that she was sick. I asked why they hadn’t tried to take her off the ventilator? He said she kept fighting it so they kept sedating her. This is just a snippet of the disrespect my sister received. I feel they didn’t even care. There was no compassion or caring for her or her family asking questions. She was not Covid positive so I asked to be an essential care giver, they did not want that they wanted her son and I to give permission to stop the respirator which we refused. We asked for visit we were denied unless we pressed the issue. Almost every time I called I got attitude from the nurses. The social worker was just as bad lying to us about just about everything. Her last day March 31st we had a virtual visit her Oxygen levels were pretty much the same as the prior week. Not even an hour later she passed. We got there just before she was almost flat on her back I’m not a medical dr or nurse but I’m pretty sure she should have been more upright. I really need answers to what happened to her…. Was it because she was obese? That was mentioned every single time we talked to a Dr.
